Taylor Creek Visitor Center Intern and Interpretor

Share |

Company/Organization: US Forest Service

Description:

The Taylor Creek Visitor Center (TCVC) serves as the only visitor center for 154,000 acre National Forest Lands surrounding Lake Tahoe. The site offers information on recreational opportunities, permit sales, and interpretive programs from walks to amphitheater programs for the general public, children, and special groups on subjects related to the natural history of Lake Tahoe. It is located in South Lake Tahoe, CA within the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) of the Forest Service (FS). The USDA Forest Service is dedicated to ‘Caring for the land and serving the people.’ TCVC is managed by the Recreation Department and Interpretive Services Divisions of the LTBMU.

The TCVC is run by one multi-year returning seasonal employee and three to five new or returning seasonal FS staff members, and various volunteer groups. Most of the programs are provided by interns and highly skilled high school students who are recruited to the TCVC through a job experience program with local schools.

General duties will include providing information to the public, leading interpretive programs, and delivering conservation education messages. The majority of each day will be spent interacting with the public within the Visitor Center building and patio. The number of public contacts per day can reach several hundred. Interns are also responsible for selling government properties, such as Wilderness Permits, and bookstore items for our interpretive association- the Tahoe Heritage Foundation. Office work, light maintenance, bathroom cleaning, responding to visitors on the phone and in writing, filing, and helping with day-to-day tasks will also be important parts of the job. Individual projects will be assigned based on the needs of the site, and the areas of interest of the intern.

Interns are provided as much structure with their schedule as possible but some flexibility must be assumed. Visitor Center staff, interns and volunteers are expected work weekend, holiday and evening shifts. Interns occupy the same office as the Site Manager, and can look forward to learning about the full breadth of activities and skills needed to run a visitor center that serves a highly visible recreation area. All staff and volunteers bring a sense of enthusiasm and humor to the site; it is a great team to work with and a beautiful place to spend the summer. Please e-mail with any additional questions.
