Marin Theatre Company (MTC) is currently accepting applications for our Arts Leadership Training Program during the 2014-15 season. Join a dynamic team of Bay Area artists and administrators dedicated to bringing professional theatre to Marin County.

End Date: June 19, 2015

Positions are available in Artistic Direction; Literary Management; Dramaturgy; Production Management; Theatre Arts Education; Development & Special Events; Community Engagement; Communications and Marketing, Graphic Production and Theatre Management.

MTC believes in cultivating the next generation of arts leaders by providing a supportive environment with increasing levels of responsibility commensurate with developed skills over the course of the internship. Interns will be exposed to all functions of their department as well as the organization as a whole. MTC provides interns with advanced training and experience in professional development, producing opportunities, and project management.

The Arts Leadership Training Program at Marin Theatre Company is designed for individuals already pursuing a path in theater, marketing or general management, providing the opportunity to transition from academia and pursue the participant’s goal of becoming a leader in in their field. By obtaining practical experience in a supportive environment, participants enhance their skills as guided participants and, eventually, as independent practitioners. The goal of our program is to prepare young arts leaders for possible integration into the Bay Area theatre community following a successful internship.

Time Commitment:
- Full Season (10 months)
- 35 hours per week
- Daily office hours between 9a-5p, some nights and weekends as needed
- Hours may increase during technical rehearsal/preview weeks and youth performances

Compensation:
This is an unpaid internship. There are opportunities for supplemental paid work through Front of House and the Education department for qualified applicants. Hours will be set and remain steady so that interns can acquire outside employment nights and weekends.

Housing:
MTC does not provide housing but has affordable furnished housing available for rent. The housing available is an apartment with shared rooms in a co-ed living environment. Rent is $600 per month and includes utilities. There is a one-time $500 non-refundable move in fee.

Supplemental Income:
Part-time paid positions may be available to participants of the Internship Program, based on need and qualifications. Possible positions include: Box Office, Café staff and After School Drama Teacher.

Training:
Members of the Arts Leadership Training Program undergo intensive trainings each month to supplement training received in academic programs. The focus of the trainings is professional and administrative skills based development. Interns will assess their short-term goals and will be assessed midway through and at the end of the internship against those goals. Mentorship provided by supervisors and specifically the director of the program is a large part of the experience. Interns are provided with constant feedback and problem solving support as they develop skills and navigate challenges. MTC provides a supportive environment within which to learn with the expectation that each participant will be stretched and expected to maintain adjustments and embrace new challenges.

JOB DESCRIPTIONS

ARTISTIC DIRECTION
This Artistic Direction Internship is designed for individuals who are looking for a well-rounded experience in how the Artistic/ Production departments function. The Artistic Direction Intern will report directly to the Artistic Director and take on responsibilities as the assistant to the Artistic Director, assistant director, artistic department administration, casting, producing and literary development. This position requires knowledge and some experience in directing, administrative duties as well as computer skills and must have a driver’s license and access to a vehicle. The Artistic Direction Intern will assist with companywide projects and events and maintain communication within the Artistic department. The Artistic Director Intern will assistant direct one to two productions in the season, participate in season planning attend rehearsals and meetings as the Artistic Director’s representative when needed, supports artistic programming within the Education department and supports company events as assigned. This position is ideal for candidates interested in pursuing Artistic Direction.


LITERARY MANAGEMENT
The Literary Management intern works with the Literary Manager. Duties include reading new plays and writing evaluations, reviewing script submissions and maintaining the script database and script library; assisting with research on upcoming productions, writing program notes and creating lobby displays; preparing dramaturgical packets, researching dramaturgical questions for productions and assisting as needed in rehearsals for upcoming main stage productions and new works readings; and copying scripts, and various administrative support duties. Exact duties determined based on interest and skill level. This position is ideal for candidates pursuing Literary Management.

DRAMATURGY
The Dramaturgy Intern works as the Assistant Dramaturg in direct collaboration with the Dramaturg on main stage productions. Duties include attending rehearsals and production meetings associated with the production; preparing dramaturgical packets, researching dramaturgical questions and participating in rehearsals for the production; offering insights and notes to the creative team as appropriate during rehearsals and tech; attending weekly artistic department meetings; coordinating audience engagement events, including leading post-show discussions, assisting in pre-show events and panel discussions, writing program notes and creating lobby displays. Rehearsal schedule determined by needs of production, attendance at weekly artistic department meetings, rehearsals and production meetings is mandatory, as is participation in audience engagement events related to productions. This position is ideal for candidates pursuing Dramaturgy or Literary Management.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
The Community Engagement intern will work directly with the Director of Education on all Audience Engagement, Creative Learning Residencies and Outreach programming. The Community Engagement Intern will foster new relationships, conduct research on the latest trends, topics and interactive engagement for Audience Engagement. The Intern will also support Community Days, Teacher’s Night Outs, Teen Nights, and Pre-and Post-show engagement. The Community Engagement Intern will assist in the administration of the Creative Learning Residency Program and assist in building relationships with new community groups in underserved communities. This position is ideal for candidates interested in Community Arts.

ARTS EDUCATION
The Arts Education Internship is ideal for a candidate who is interested in producing programing for youth, families and the community. Working directly with the Director of Education and Education Coordinator, the intern will assist in all administrative components of the education, outreach and audience engagement programming. Throughout their tenure, the intern will learn about curriculum development, producing techniques, fundraising, season planning for TYA selections and main stage audience engagement. Dependent upon experience and interest level, teaching opportunities are available. This position is ideal for a candidate interested in pursuing a career as an Education Director or Teaching Artist.

COMMUNICATIONS & MARKETING INTERN
This internship is designed for individuals interested in marketing theater through social media, public relations and outreach. The Communications & Marketing Intern will work directly under the Communications Director to keep content updated on the website and social media websites and execute outreach strategies as directed. Intern may also create videos for distribution based on experience and skill level. This position requires knowledge and practical understanding of social media as well as an interest and knowledge of theatre. The Communications & Marketing Intern will get a sense of working within a theater company by contributing support to companywide projects and events. This position is ideal for candidates pursuing a career in Marketing and Communications for non-profit theater.

GRAPHIC PRODUCTION INTERN
This internship is designed for individuals interested in marketing theater through graphic and video production. The Graphic Production Intern will work directly under MTC’s Graphic Designer to assist in designing and producing print, web and video materials for the promotion of MTC’s various programs as directed. This position requires knowledge and practical understanding of Adobe Creative Suite, Final Cut and video production. The Graphic Production Intern will get a sense of working within a theater company by contributing support to companywide projects and events. This position is ideal for candidates pursuing a career in Marketing, Graphic Production or Video Production for non-profit theater.

DEVELOPMENT & SPECIAL EVENTS INTERN
The Special Events Internship is designed to immerse the intern in the experience of producing events specifically for the purpose of cultivation donors and raising funds to support the work of the organization. Candidates must have an interest in and knowledge of theatre. The Special Events intern will conduct research, identify and solicit vendors, in-kind catering and wine contributions; maintain databases, provide administrative assistance, event support and other duties as assigned. This internship is ideal for candidates interested in pursuing a career in Development for non-profit theater.
THEATER MANAGEMENT INTERN
This internship is designed to introduce individuals to the management of a nonprofit regional theater. In the context of board/management and artistic/management relationships, and working directly with the General Manager and Managing Director, the Theater Management intern will participate in finance, budgeting, season planning, development, marketing, strategic planning, human resource management, best practices policymaking, and collective bargaining. Daily tasks include financial analysis, development and marketing writing, contract drafting, and attendance at board committee meetings. Long range projects include grant writing, special event coordination, and identification of operational efficiencies. This internship is ideal for candidates interested in pursuing a career as a general manager or managing director for a nonprofit theater.
