Facility Description: Nearly 6,300 wild animals native to New Jersey are treated in our rehabilitation hospital each year. Many are returned to the wild. Others, whose injuries prevent release, remain in our outdoor Wildlife Housing Area to help the public learn about native species. The refuge is situated on 171 wooded acres surrounding pristine Cedar Run Lake.

Internship Description: We are seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented, individual to work in our rehabilitation hospital. Interns will deal directly with the public bringing in animals and will also assist with direct animal care and our environmental enrichment program. Assignments will include; feeding, cleaning, medicating, and otherwise providing care for injured and orphaned wildlife (this includes dishes and laundry); answering the telephone and giving information; returning animal concern phone calls; greeting people with incoming animals; and all other aspects of the Refuge. Internships are unpaid, but can be used for college credit.

Length: Internships start end of May or beginning of June (dates flexible). Internships run for 12 weeks. Internships are generally full-time (40hr/week).

Qualifications:

Academic background (college coursework and/or degree preferable) in wildlife studies, wildlife rehabilitation or related field; knowledge of native species essential; ability to relate to the public in a positive and empathetic manner is key to this position. The successful intern will be well-spoken, friendly, calm and pleasant, must be a self-starter who is flexible, committed to teamwork but able to work independently when necessary. Must have good telephone skills, an ability to work in a hectic, sometimes emotional situation and must have a willingness to learn and participate in various aspects of refuge work. Rabies vaccinations are required, as they allow interns to work with the full spectrum of species that are admitted to Cedar Run.

Additional Info:
Please note in your cover letter if you have previously received the rabies vaccination. It is not a routine vaccine, therefore you would have only gotten it if there was an interaction with a suspect animal.
