Participation in the Animal Care Internship program with The Wild Center is a unique and exciting way to gain invaluable, hands-on experience in the field of animal care. Located in the heart of a six million-acre state park in upstate New York, the mission of the Wild Center (TWC) is to ignite an enduring passion for the Adirondacks where people and nature can thrive together and set an example for the world. Qualified applicants will have the opportunity to work alongside TWC staff while learning and completing daily animal care tasks. Interns will assist museum biologists in routine animal care including animal observations, diet preparation, enclosure cleaning and servicing, behavioral enrichment, and record keeping. Interns will assist with public education programs such as otter enrichment, animal encounters and canoe programs.

Qualifications:

• Completed 2 or more years of college courses in biology, zoology, or related fields.
• Previous experience in animal care preferred but not required.
• Comfort with handling captive animals, including snakes, frogs, fish, turtles and raptors
• Must be a highly motivated and organized individual with excellent communication skills and customer service skills and have a passion to work in a fast-paced museum setting.
• Must be able to lift over 50 lbs
• Strong skills in public speaking, writing, and computers.
• Flexible work schedule- weekends, some evenings and long days are required.
• Must be available to work from May 19th through September 1st.
• Experience or interest in working with innovative teaching technologies helpful, specifically graphic design, Science on a Sphere and distance learning.
• Experience paddling tandem canoes and providing instruction highly preferred
• Previous teaching experience in a museum, nature center, park or zoo setting highly preferred
• Must have valid driver’s license.

• $250 per week stipend

• Develop valuable skills as an interpreter and a deeper knowledge of the Adirondack Park
• Interpretive Guide Certification from the National Association for Interpretation
• Formal training opportunities and ongoing mentorship in the principles of interpretation and interpretive program development/delivery
• CPR and First Aid certification if necessary
• Museum staff will work with you to gain college credit if desired
