At The Sankofa Center, we empower people to change lives and foster healthy behaviors to prevent, detect, and treat HIV/AIDS. We do this through utilizing traditional African dance and drama fused with health information to educate people of all ages in Ghana. We are committed to providing free counseling, rapid HIV/AIDS testing and connecting people with HIV/AIDS to local medical resources. We value equipping the next generation with tools to wipe out HIV/AIDS with a compassionate and open-minded ethos.
Our Impact:
Since 2004, we have educated 35,000 students about HIV prevention, 50,000 community members on HIV transmission, and have provided over 4,000 individuals with free rapid HIV testing with links to care.

Volunteer/Internship Program Description:

The Sankofa Center fuses traditional African dance, drama, and contemporary art genres with W.H.O. health information to educate Ghanaian youths and adults about HIV/AIDS. These very necessary performances are both entertaining and educational. Our program utilizes the vibrant energies of interns and a local team to tour various villages and schools to help eradicate HIV/AIDS in Africa through culturally appropriate methods! They also conduct risk assessment/risk reduction counseling and free rapid HIV testing during village outreach to link those needing treatment with medical partners as outlined by Ghanas National AIDS Control Program.

International interns are accommodated with full room and board in The Sankofa Center Compound dormitory with exposure to real world traditional Ghanaian life with trusted host families living in the compound. Cultural exposure is also enhanced through weekend trips to popular tourist and beach destinations. However, interns have the security of Western trained local staff, health and safety protocols, and American trained coordinators and staff liaisons to assist interns throughout the duration of their tenure. On completion, interns receive a Certificate of Completion commemorating their service.
