Description:

The Mid Valley Media Center is a multi-platform, community-based media center creating and distributing news, information, and entertainment for non-profit, educational, and community-based organizations in the areas of El Monte and South El Monte. We focus on community engagement and deliver high quality local content through print, audio, and social media channels.

We have internships available for community based print and social media journalists to research and write stories for The Mid Valley News, a community newspaper covering stories for the communities of El Monte, South El Monte and surrounding areas. Current research projects include research and reporting of Affordable Housing Solutions, and Homeless and Foster Youth in the Schools.

The ideal candidate must be available for meetings on Wednesday afternoons and occasional weekends and evenings. Candidates flexible schedule is key to cover events and take advantage of opportunities to engage with the community.

Our internship program strives to grow our interns’ knowledge of the media industry and expand their networking opportunities. Compensation for this internship is currently limited to class credit only. Perks include training and/or development, periodic dinners or luncheons, opportunities to engage with community, business, and local government leaders.

Qualifications:

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Journalism Intern is responsible of producing local content for the El Monte / South El Monte communities from a variety of sources
Report and write news stories quickly without error (requires excellent writing skills).
Monitor social media for buzzy stories and leads for new stories.
He or she will have to be well versed in digital narrative and be able to maximize the usage of multimedia resources.
Pitch, research, and create stories for online and print publication as well as assist other local digital journalists with current stories and projects.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be pursuing a Bachelor degree at an accredited institution in media or media-related industries.
Must be able to receive class credit
Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.
Must be 18 years of age or older.
Must have unrestricted authorization to work in the U.S.
Must be willing to work from offices in El Monte, CA.
Social Media skills required.
Knowledge of the following software required: Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Microsoft Word
