YOUTH SERVICE AMERICA (YSA) – the global organization that improves communities by increasing the number and the diversity of young people serving in substantive roles – is seeking a Communications Intern to assist the Communications team.

Applicant may be a graduate or advanced undergraduate student and should be able to commit to approximately 20 hours / week. This intern position is non-paid, but will offer lots of great, hands-on learning opportunities. Offices are conveniently located nearby the McPherson Square metro station.
Responsibilities will include:
• Support the Communications department with all public relations efforts
• Assist with promotions and media relations for YSA events
• Draft press releases, media alerts and marketing collateral
• Research and craft media lists
• Pitch media and fulfill press requests
• Assist in image management
• Liaise with third-party communication departments
• Track and report media coverage
• Other duties as assigned by Communications Manager

The ideal candidate will be a “go-getter” and willing to pitch in wherever needed. Strong writing skills, a willingness to learn and a positive attitude are essential. Knowledge of youth service issues and formal Communications education/experience is helpful but not required. Second-language skills, such as Spanish, would be a big plus.

Experience and Qualifications
• Excellent writing and oral communications skills
• Detail-oriented and able to multi-task efficiently
• The Communications Intern must be comfortable taking direction and working within a team setting. Simultaneously, s/he must have the ability to work independently and proactively, at times with minimal direction
• Proficient with MS Office, Publisher, Excel. Graphic design skills a plus
