Share |

Company/Organization: National Endowment for Democrracy

Description:

NED Announcement: The National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a congressionally funded, private, nonprofit grant making organization that works to support freedom around the world, is seeking candidates for the Penn Kemble Youth Forum Internship.

Position Summary: The Penn Kemble Youth Forum aims to cultivate a commitment to an understanding of democracy assistance among leading students from within local universities and future generations of foreign policy practitioners. The forum will also provide educational and networking opportunities for these “Penn Kemble Associates” to attend meetings, take advantage of NED’s research and information facilities and to engage with foreign policy experts and former government officials.

An advisory committee comprising local academics and democracy practitioners will identify and recruit to the forum young students and professionals with a demonstrable commitment to international engagement, defending human rights and advancing democracy.

Penn Kemble’s death in October 2005 robbed the democracy movement of one of its most committed activists and strategists. His political evolution took him from early involvement in the young socialist and civil rights movements, through engagement with the U.S. labor movement in combatting Communism, especially within Central America, to more recent initiatives, including the Transatlantic Democracy Network and Civitas, an international program to promote civic education. He served as deputy and acting director of the United States Information Agency in the Clinton administration, and Secretary of State Albright appointed him U.S. representative to the Community of Democracies. In 2002, Secretary of State Powell appointed him to lead a group to investigate slavery and human trafficking in Sudan.

The National Endowment for Democracy seeks a highly qualified undergraduate/graduate student to organize forums and other events addressing some of Penn’s key interests and commitments, including:
*The role of organized labor, either in democratic transitions, as a balance wheel of democracy
