Internship Description

Internships with the Polar Initiative are designed to provide the opportunity for practical experience in an environment that successfully combines scholarship with public policy. Interns will gain valuable experience in various projects including conference and event organization, publication research and preparation, academic research, and administrative assignments in support of both Polar Initiative and Wilson Center activities. Interns are also encouraged to pursue independent research projects pertinent to the programs objectives.

Interns assist with all aspects of the Polar Initiatives day-to-day operations and programming. Sample duties may include:

editing and proofreading written material
providing ancillary research for publications
identifying potential speakers and participants for events
assisting staff with preparation for events
other administrative duties as assigned

Eligibility Requirements

Successful applicants should have strong research and administrative skills; be detail-oriented, able to work independently, and able to work collaboratively; and, be currently enrolled in an undergraduate/graduate degree program, accepted to enter an advanced degree program, or a recent graduate. Strong writing and analytical skills are essential. Prior experience in Arctic issues and a desire to engage and immerse oneself in the programs material are beneficial.

This internship requires a commitment of 20 hours per week and is unpaid.

Please note: international students studying in the U.S. are eligible, but they must hold a valid F-1 or J-1 visa and appropriate work authorization. All international students must obtain written permission from their designated school official or responsible officer for visas at their university stating they have valid immigration status and are eligible to intern at the Wilson Center.

The Wilson Center is not able to sponsor visas for interns. If you are an international student not already studying in the U.S. on a F-1 or J-1 visa, then you must go through a university exchange program or an outside organization that will sponsor your visa. You must have the appropriate visa to apply for this internship.
