The American Cancer Society is a not-for-profit health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem. We are also dedicated to hiring and retaining a diverse workforce.

We have an exciting opportunity available for a motivated Endurance Events Intern for our Atlanta, GA office.

**This is a 15 hour/week, part-time nonpaid position.

**The candidate must have experience with social media and other marketing channels and strong computer skills.

DetermiNation Endurance Program Intern

DetermiNation is the American Cancer Society’s endurance event program, and a nation of athletes determined to end cancer. This powerful and inspiring movement saves lives by enabling athletes to dedicate their training and participation in marathons, triathlons, cycling races, and other endurance events to a lifesaving effort to fight a disease that has already taken too many lives. Over the years, over 16,000 athletes have had an experience of a lifetime while raising millions for the fight against all types of cancer. With every step taken and every mile conquered, these determined athletes are helping create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. Determination participates in over 90 events nationwide and is continually growing.

The intern position would report to the Georgia Chapter Endurance Project Manager in Atlanta.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

•Assist in the creation of marketing, recruiting, and communication strategies
•Identify key opportunities within the cycling community to recruit; promote and gain exposure in expanding the event venue.

•Assist with building and working with athlete driven volunteer committees.

•Attend events, seminars, trainings, etc.

•Assist with recruiting, developing, retaining and recognizing volunteers in support of fundraising activities to meet and exceed income goals.

•Perform research and report on competitive landscape for endurance fundraising programs

•Assist with the development of social media plan and execution

•Assist with creating press releases and other communications on a regular basis

•Assist with organizing special team events and fundraising events

•Coordinate steering committee meetings and managing action item lists

•Promote Determination program through public speaking engagements and other recruiting opportunities

•Assist with volunteer recruitment and management, execution, logistics, collateral materials and local event promotion.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

•Knowledge of the American Cancer Society’s mission and desire to advance the mission in the community

•Ability to make necessary time commitment to the position

•Reliant self starter who is able to perform work with little supervision

•Strong leader with the ability and connections to recruit key volunteers, gain consensus amongst the committee, and possess the ability work well with people

•Able to serve as a positive, knowledgeable representative of the American Cancer Society and the event in the community

•Excellent time management and attention to detail skills

•Knowledge of social media and other marketing channels

•Outgoing personality with the ability to recruit others into the program

Qualifications:

Position Requirements: Minimum Qualifications:
• Interns must be full-time undergraduate or graduate college students in good academic standing.
• Strong computer skills including Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.
• Ability to recruit and manage relationships with volunteers.
• Reliable transportation required.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Organizational Skills
• Initiative and ability to work independently

Other Desirable Qualifications:
• 2 year related education and work experience preferable but not required
• Successful non-profit fundraising experience.
• Sporting events and special event planning experience.
• Successful experience working in the areas of community organization, volunteer management, and/or Income program development.
• Knowledge of and personal experience in endurance athletic events – marathons and half marathons
