Unpaid Spring 2012 Internship - Communications

Student Intern -CommunicationsPosition Purpose: The intern will work directly with the Communications Department to assist publicizing, planning and coordinating United Way’s Celebration Event, campaign kick-off and other internal/external events. Duties will include: project planning, letter writing, working with vendors, day-of event logistics, drafting releases, contacting media, message development and community relations outreach.
Principle Responsibilities:
•Organize event mailings and other materials.
•Work with staff to develop ideas for media stories and placement.
•Write and distribute media communications, including media releases, calendar listings, media fact sheets and press kits as needed.
•Maintain/organize records and files related specifically to the media.
•Assist with community relations events including planning, media and spokesperson training.
•Assist with monthly e-newsletter production including copy writing and research.
•Monitor daily news online to collect and archive news pertaining to United Way and health and human services in general.
•Help update and maintain media contact lists.
•Research media rates/kits.
•Assist with blogging.
•Message development and community relations outreach.Minimum Qualifications:
•Recent graduate or college student working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations or related field.
•Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
•Ability to meet deadlines.
•Ability to organize, prioritize, delegate and work independently.
•Experience working with computerized databases.
•Strong attention to detail.Required hours are 15-25 hours per week.
Please note that this is a learning experience and the student intern is not replacing a regular staff position. Both United Way and the student understand that no wages will be given for the internship period.
