The AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) is seeking a creative and motivated individual to intern in its Communications Department. This is a great opportunity to gain valuable experience and develop portfolio pieces as a film/video editor while working at an active, upbeat non-profit.

We are looking for an individual with experience in video design who wishes to learn more in this area while helping to develop a series of short videos that highlights the work of AFC and its partners. The videos will be featured on AFC’s website, YouTube channel, and used for marketing and promotional purposes. The videos will be a mix of marketing and journalistic in storytelling tone. During his/her tenure, the Video Intern will also have the opportunity to learn about HIV/AIDS prevention, care and advocacy.

The Video Intern will directly work with the Communications team with drafting concepts and scripts for the video. The intern will help refine the concept and script, direct and produce the video components, develop any additional multimedia components, and edit the final piece.

The Video Intern may spend some of his or her intern hours outside of the office, but must be responsive and meet regularly with staff. This person will work closely with AFC’s Staff Writer & Communications Manager.

This internship is designed to be both educational and practical. In this position, the intern will learn how to take skills she or he may have acquired in school related to his or her particular areas of interest, and apply them in a professional setting. He or she will gain a better understanding of the role that visual communication can play in a non-profit setting, and be better prepared to work in the arena of communications, visual communications, graphic design, journalism, web design, public relations and marketing. The candidate will also have opportunities to network with program staff, policy staff, development staff, and the broader community.

The Video Intern will learn to:
• Set-up and tear down shoots (cameras, lighting, backdrops);
• Manage release forms;
• Convert Beta tapes to DVD;
• Capture footage;
• Update social networking pages;
• Archive final project;
• Tell powerful stories;
• Shoot AFC events/happenings as needed or as a specific interest develops.

Qualifications:
• Current or recent enrollment in a graduate or undergraduate degree program with an interest and aptitude to work in communications, visual communications, graphic design, journalism, web design, public relations and marketing fields;
• Experience with Adobe Premier, AfterEffects, Final Cut Pro;
• Experience shooting video;
• Knowledge of lighting and audio;
• Experience in video and image editing;
• Excellent cooperation and communication skills.

This internship is unpaid (stipend available), however, AFC can help interns obtain college credit for their work, where available. The intern will receive necessary training and staff supervision. We require a minimum of 15 hours/week for a minimum of 8 weeks, though longer internships are preferred. Communications, visual communication, graphic design, journalism, web design, public relations and marketing majors are encouraged to apply.
