Internship Title: Learning Planning & Evaluation Internship

Internship Department: Learning Planning & Evaluation

Objective: To assist with the review and synthesis of current research and trends of science teaching, learning, and assessment to help inform the Learning Group in the development of learning experiences and common practices in instruction and evaluation

Responsibilities:
• Work collaboratively with Learning Planning & Evaluation staff
• Identify and access venues for research and practitioner-based literature
• Engage in conversations around findings including gaps in the literature or emerging trends
• Synthesize a summation of findings in the form of a brief research narrative or abstract, including bibliography

Final Product(s):
• Written research narrative or abstract
• Bibliography
• Documentation of sources accessed (i.e. online databases, etc.)

Qualifications: Applicants with a bachelor’s degree in education or a related field are preferred. At minimum, applicants must be in their third year of undergraduate study.

Applicants must have:
• Working knowledge of education and learning theory.
• Ability to efficiently retrieve general information using the internet.
• Proficiency at searching academic catalogs or databases.
• Ability to evaluate sources for credibility, validity, and relevance.
• Familiarity with academic writing style, including proper citation.
• Strong analytical skills and ability to synthesize information.

Additional preferable traits include:
• Informal education experience.
• Experience conducting original research/generating data.
• Knowledge or experience with fields outside of education such as animal/environmental science, psychology, sociology, business, design, technology, etc.

*A research writing sample (i.e. literature review or abstract) not to exceed 10 pages must be submitted.

Minimum GPA: 3.0 on a 4.0 scale

Desired Year in School: Junior or Senior undergraduate student; Graduate student preferred.

Compensation: Unpaid. Interns must make arrangements with their schools to gain academic credit for this internship. Shedd Aquarium is happy to provide any work documentation necessary for this process.

Desired Majors: Education or related fields, psychology, sociology, and sciences also acceptable

Time Commitment: Flexible. This internship would be approximately 15 to 20 hours per week. For training purposes, Wednesday availability is preferred.
