Natural Areas Management Intern
Purpose and Development Opportunities
Provide support to the Horticulture Department, while gaining knowledge of vegetation management and how it relates to natural resource management. A large portion of this internship is focused around invasive plant control. You will be provided training in management techniques, equipment, chemicals, and plant identification all in the rich environment of a museum and public garden. There are roughly thirteen acres of Natural areas at Minnetrista all requiring unique management strategies.
You will work directly with the Minnetrista’s gardeners to gain hands-on experience maintaining Minnetrista’s natural areas. This will include but not be limited to chemical applications, manual removal of invasive plants, native plant installation and various other natural areas related maintenance tasks. In addition, you will also be assigned an independent project that will be completed during your internship. The project will be determined based on your interests and our needs. You will take part in Plant of the Week, a weekly walk where all participants share information about a plant that was researched.

Length of Appointment
200 hour minimum
Time Commitment
20-40 hours per week preferred, other schedules may be considered (Monday – Friday 7am-3:40pm)
Salary
Project and time commitment based stipend
Essential duties and responsibilities
- Complete an independent project
- Learn and implement vegetation management techniques.
- Adhere to all safety policies and procedures
- Expand plant knowledge
- Give a presentation
- Other duties may be assigned

Qualifications:

Qualifications
The requirements of the job include the ability to work outside in varying weather conditions, and to work independently. An interest in the natural environment is a must. Must have had course work in natural resource management and plant identification is beneficial. You must have an interest in having training on safe chemical usage. Must be reliable and work well with both staff and volunteers.
