Description:

We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated student leaders to participate in the Cradles to Crayons internship program as a way to increase our capacity, which directly affects our ability to serve more children. The Cradles to Crayons Distribution Department establishes and maintains partnerships with social service agencies to fill a critical gap of essential items for children in need. The College Corps Distribution Partnerships Intern will be immersed in the Cradles to Crayons Distribution Department, and be in charge of a variety of tasks that include, but are not exclusive to:
- Management of Bulk Requests by Program Partners, including outreach to specific organizations in the area who we feel may benefit from such a distribution
- Generate and distribute weekly reports articulating product demand
- Illustrate our impact weekly by distributing personal stories about the children we serve
- Oversee all responsibilities related to meeting monthly requests for Distribution Speakers
- Proactively manage the return rate of surveys, applications, meeting requests, etc.
- Keep an air of flexibility to take on special projects as they come, including, but not exclusive to: helping with Kidpack pick-ups as needed, drafting emails as needed, taking findings from mapping project and help outreach to potential transportation partners, etc.
- Participate in ongoing orientation/training and leadership development sessions.

Beyond hands on work experience, we are committed to ensuring that interns have the opportunity to learn about the various components of building a social enterprise. As such, we have designed programs for interns that will focus on social entrepreneurship and the management of a social enterprise. Through structured sessions which will include the CEO and Founder of Cradles to Crayons, Lynn Margherio, interns will have the opportunity to network and learn about the success factors that drive a social enterprise.

As a College Corps Distribution Department Intern, you will gain skills in these areas of the nonprofit management field: exposure to the hundreds of non-profit programs/organizations across the state of Massachusetts that partner with C2C, utilize and build upon customer service skills, build skills in collaboration across departments within a nonprofit, and increase your knowledge and exposure to social enterprises. Our hope is that through your internship at C2C, you will learn valuable skills to create lasting change in the world.

Cradles to Crayons

Cradles to Crayons (C2C) was launched in 2002 by Lynn Margherio with the mission to provide, free of charge, children living in low income and homeless situations from birth to pre-teen the basic essentials they need to feel safe, warm, ready to learn, and valued. By partnering with schools, corporations and community groups for donations, and with social-service organizations serving homeless and low-income families, we connect communities that have surplus resources—new or used items in good condition—with communities that desperately need access to those resources. We currently serve over 55,000 children a year out of two locations in Boston and Philadelphia.

One of the unique components of the C2C operating model is that most of our work is accomplished through the efforts of volunteers who work in our “Giving Factory.” In 2009, over 16,000 volunteers of all ages and backgrounds worked in the “Giving Factory” to sort, clean, and assemble donations for over 45,000 custom “KidPacks” to be delivered through our social-service partners. Through these meaningful, hands on volunteer opportunities, we aspire to set a foundation for lasting change.

Cradles to Crayons has received numerous awards for its success as a social enterprise. In 2008 it was recognized by the Social Innovation Forum as an innovator of the year, in 2009 and 2010 it received the Charity Navigator 4 star recognition, and in 2010 it received the Boston Business Journal award for innovative partnership with its work with Staples Corporation, and was recognized as a 2010 Bank of America Neighborhood Builder ™.
