Description:

We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated student leaders to participate in Cradles to Crayons’ internship program. As an intern in this program, you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in our Giving Corps department. The C2C Giving Corps was created in Fall 2010 as a means of increasing our capacity to host volunteers at The Giving Factory, bring in donations, and ultimately to serve more children. Our goal is to engage teens, college students and adults in this process in order to teach them our volunteer process and learn from their feedback how to perfect our engagement strategies. The Service Leadership Intern will focus on the engagement of middle and high school students in the Teen Leadership Corps.

Beyond hands on work experience, we are committed to ensuring that interns have the opportunity learn about the various components of building a social enterprise. As such, we have designed programs for interns that will focus on social entrepreneurship and the management of a social
enterprise. Through structured sessions which will include the CEO and Founder of Cradles to Crayons, Lynn Margherio, interns will have the opportunity to network and learn about the success factors that drive a social enterprise.

As a College Corps Service Leadership Intern, you will gain skills in volunteer management, social media, and curriculum development, and increase your knowledge and exposure to social enterprises. Our hope is that through your internship at C2C, you will learn valuable skills to create lasting change in the world.

Interns are expected to commit to working one semester (12 weeks) for an average 6-8 hours per week and responsibilities are likely to include:
-Maintain a regular schedule of updates for the C2C Giving Corps’ social media outlets
-Develop and execute leadership development curriculum for Teen Leadership Corps training & Leadership Development Day

Cradles to Crayons

Cradles to Crayons (C2C) was launched in 2002 by Lynn Margherio with the mission to provide, free of charge, children living in low income and homeless situations from birth to pre-teen the basic essentials they need to feel safe, warm, ready to learn, and valued. By partnering with schools, corporations and community groups for donations, and with social-service organizations serving homeless and low-income families, we connect communities that have surplus resources—new or used items in good condition—with communities that desperately need access to those resources. We currently serve over 55,000 children a year out of two locations in Boston and Philadelphia.

One of the unique components of the C2C operating model is that most of our work is accomplished through the efforts of volunteers who work in our “Giving Factory.” In 2009, over 16,000 volunteers of all ages and backgrounds worked in the “Giving Factory” to sort, clean, and assemble donations for over 45,000 custom “KidPacks” to be delivered through our social-service partners. Through these meaningful, hands on volunteer opportunities, we aspire to set a foundation for lasting change.

Cradles to Crayons has received numerous awards for its success as a social enterprise. In 2008 it was recognized by the Social Innovation Forum as an innovator of the year, in 2009 and 2010 it received the Charity Navigator 4 star recognition, and in 2010 it received the Boston Business Journal award for innovative partnership with its work with Staples Corporation, and was recognized as a 2010 Bank of America Neighborhood Builder ™.
