Description:
We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated student leaders to participate in Cradles to Crayons’ leadership programs. As a College Corps Volunteer Leader, you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in our volunteer operations and take on a leadership role overseeing volunteer groups. During every three hour shift in our “Giving Factory,” volunteer groups of 30-100 people work to process the essential goods for children. As such, we have designed programs for participants that will focus on social entrepreneurship and the management of a social enterprise. Through structured sessions which will include the CEO and Founder of Cradles to Crayons, Lynn Margherio, participants will have the opportunity to network and learn about the success factors that drive a social enterprise.

As a College Corps Volunteer Leader, you will gain skills in volunteer management, customer service, public speaking and leadership and increase your knowledge of and exposure to social enterprises. Our hope is that through your experience at C2C, you will learn valuable skills to create lasting change in the world.

Cradles to Crayons
Cradles to Crayons (C2C) was launched in 2002 by Lynn Margherio with the mission to provide, free of charge, children living in low income and homeless situations from birth to pre-teen the basic essentials they need to feel safe, warm, ready to learn, and valued. By partnering with schools, corporations and community groups for donations, and with social-service organizations serving homeless and low-income families, we connect communities that have surplus resources—new or used items in good condition—with communities that desperately need access to those resources. We currently serve over 55,000 children a year out of two locations in Boston and Philadelphia. One of the unique components of the C2C operating model is that most of our work is accomplished through the efforts of volunteers who work in our “Giving Factory.” In 2009, over 16,000 volunteers of all ages and backgrounds worked in the “Giving Factory” to sort, clean, and assemble donations for over 45,000 custom “KidPacks” to be delivered through our social-service partners. Through these meaningful, hands on volunteer opportunities, we aspire to set a foundation for lasting change.
Cradles to Crayons has received numerous awards for its success as a social enterprise. In 2008 it was recognized by the Social Innovation Forum as an innovator of the year, in 2009 and 2010 it received the Charity Navigator 4 star recognition, and in 2010 it received the Boston Business Journal award for innovative partnership with its work with Staples Corporation, and was recognized as a 2010 Bank of America Neighborhood Builder ™.
