Description:

The Wild Center seeks highly motivated and organized Naturalists to work in a year-long paid internship as front line staff interpreting the natural history of the Adirondack Park. Naturalists are trained in the field of interpretation and museum best practices and apply their skills and knowledge to directly support the mission “To ignite an enduring passion for the Adirondacks where people and nature can thrive together and set an example for the world.” This position offers collaborative and independent experiences in both formal and informal interpretation, school and group interactions, event management, outdoor programs including naturalist walks, canoe and paddle boarding trips, knowledge in natural history, and animal handling experiences. Wide breadths of place-based opportunities are available and change seasonally to provide professional growth and in-depth knowledge in museum based education.

Qualifications:

• Completion of a 4 year degree at an accredited college or university in natural sciences, environmental education, natural history interpretation, or a related field
• Ability to lead 2 mile plus walks on uneven terrain, seasonally dependent snowshoe use and ability to lift over 25lbs
• Strong skills in communication, public speaking, customer service, writing, and computers. Additionally skills in art, multimedia and graphic arts are desired
• Prior knowledge of the flora and fauna of the Adirondack region and identification skills highly desired
• Comfort and interest in handling captive animals, including reptiles and amphibians
• Experience with stand-up paddleboards or tandem canoes on flat water with skills in instruction preferred
• Must be highly motivated, organized and want to work in a fast-paced museum
• Previous teaching experience in a museum, nature center, park or zoo setting
• Valid driver’s license required

$350 weekly stipend
