Development/Communications Intern will assume the following primary responsibilities:
1. Assist Development with the management of our membership program, adopt-a turtle program and preparation/day of management of weekly 5 K run/walk. Create and host a fundraiser for the Bald Head Island Conservancy. Assist development with various fundraisers and outreach events. 2. Assist with the development of marketing strategies for promoting the Bald Head Island Conservancy. Execute these concepts and strategies through community outreach to on-island organizations, general public, members, and donors. Develop content for and manage promotional materials including print and electronic newsletters and social media stories, media releases, island reports and other materials as needed. Position Responsibilities
Though job titles vary (Sea Turtle, Education, Conservation, Retail, and Marketing/ Development Intern), all summer interns will be crossed-trained and expected to assist in numerous Conservancy activities. All interns:
? Promote the Conservancy’s mission of island-wide conservation and preservation (see www.bhic.org/about-us?)
? Work the Conservancy’s front information desk by greeting visitors, providing excellent customer service, signing the public up for programs, selling memberships, teaching about Conservancy animals and exhibits, and assisting with opening and closing duties
? Assist with conservation projects and responses to wildlife emergency calls (see www.bhic.org/conservation?)
? Lead public sea turtle walk program (9:00 pm - 12:00 am) for Conservancy members and assist with sea turtle nest excavations by educating attendees on the sea turtle protection program (see? ?www.bhic.org/sea-turtle-protection-program?)
? Assist with animal husbandry and maintenance of animal exhibits (terrestrial, freshwater, & saltwater) and classroom spaces
? Assist with special events including Turtle Trot 5K events, Lectures, and Annual 4th of July Picnic
? Help with other duties associated with non-profit business activities including mail, recycling, facilities maintenance, assisting in Turtle Central Gift Shop, etc.

Qualifications:

Qualifications
? Rising juniors, seniors, or recent graduates from an accredited college or university
? Majors in biology, marine biology, environmental science, education, business,
communications, marketing, or related courses of study
? Excellent communication and customer service skills and comfort interacting with diverse
groups of people
? Computer proficiency with MS Office applications ?(and Adobe Creative Suite for
Communications position)
? Ability to both be self-directed and work within a team environment
? Ability to work in physically challenging environments, including long periods exposed to
extreme temperatures, while keeping an upbeat attitude
? Ability to lift 40 lbs
? Possess a valid Driver’s License
? CLEAN background check is required before selection

Compensation:? $400/month + housing, utilities, and weekly ferry tickets.
Interns are provided with shared living quarters in the BHI Conservancy dorm, and share a room with 3-5 other interns (males and females in separate bedrooms). Interns must live in the dormitory. Utilities include water, electric, and internet. Also included are parking for a vehicle at Deep Point Marina and weekly ferry tickets for trips between the island and the mainland (total value of benefits = $560/month).
Schedule
The BHI Conservancy office is open from 8:30 am – 5:00 pm every day. Depending on the position, interns will periodically have work starting as early as 7:00 am and ending as late as 12:00 am, usually not within the same day. Sea turtle patrol schedule is from 9:00 pm - 6:00 am. Average workweek is 50 - 55 hours with one day off per week.

2020 BHI Conservancy summer interns will spend 3 months living and working in the unique setting of Bald Head Island. Bald Head Island Conservancy internships are open to rising juniors, seniors or recent graduates from any accredited college or university, with majors in biology, marine biology, environmental science, education, business, communications, marketing, or related courses of study. The internship program is designed to provide young professionals with hands-on work experience at a small, environmental non-profit organization. The Bald Head Island Conservancy welcomes applicants of all races, creeds, gender and sexual orientations.
