The Center for Rural Affairs utilizes policy, advocacy, and community outreach to advance renewable energy systems throughout the Upper Midwest and Great Plains. The successful candidate will complement these efforts by working with rural leaders to highlight the negative impacts of climate change and the benefits rural communities will realize by taking action.

This is a great opportunity to work on an important and growing issue, and a chance to dig deep and discover the many facets of one of our nation’s biggest challenges. This position is more than sending emails and making phone calls. You will develop a strong understanding of climate and energy policy and actively shape the way our rural communities prepare for the future.

Responsibilities

Organizing: arrange and host community meetings; draft and send paper or email alerts; identify and engage grassroots supporters; attend meetings and conference calls with other organizations and agencies; create and distribute advocacy materials; attend public meetings and legislative hearings; build relationships with governmental officials and community leaders

Outreach: author outreach and education materials; identify opportunities to attend conferences and give presentations; author news articles, newsletter items; give interviews; engage contacts in continued advocacy; develop new and innovative ways to interact with grassroots supporters, and provide them with the tools for them to organize themselves.

Coordination

This position requires working cooperatively with rural community members and leaders throughout the Upper Midwest and Great Plains. The successful candidate will work closely with Center board and staff, as well as the board and staff of partner organizations. You will also have the opportunity to attend meetings and conferences to broaden your understanding of related issues and further build a supportive network.

Qualifications:

Preferred Skills and Experience

1. Self-starter and passionate about environmental issues and rural communities
2. Energetic and goal oriented
3. People and interpersonal skills, collaboration and coalition building, capacity building
4. Strong and motivated work ethic
5. Community organizing and ability to motivate grassroots (campaign experience preferred)
6. Some knowledge or experience working in rural communities
7. Able to manage multiple assignments and solve problems
8. Strong writing and verbal communications skills
9. Able to take direction and work independently
10. Willingness to travel

The term for Fellows is generally 12 months, though may be renewable for a second 12 months in some cases.
