The National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a congressionally funded, private, nonprofit grant-making organization in Washington, D.C., seeks an Assistant Editor for the Journal of Democracy (JOD), a quarterly publication that addresses the problems and prospects of democracy around the world. The Assistant Editor also serves as the assistant to NED’s Vice President for Studies and Analysis and the Journal of Democracy’s Coeditor. This position is based in Washington, D.C.

Position Summary:
The Assistant Editor will create the “Back of the Book” section of the Journal of Democracy, assist with editing and proofreading, carry out research and perform information management tasks (both manual and electronic), as well as assist the Vice President and the Coeditor with administrative tasks.
Responsibilities:
• Research, write, and edit the “Back of the Book” section of the JOD, including “Election Watch,” “Documents on Democracy,” and “News and Notes.”
• Proofread and copyedit manuscripts, brochures, conference reports, etc., as well as fact-check and do background research
• Manage the review process for unsolicited manuscripts from start to finish
• Serve as the point person for book reviews; order review copies of recently published books for review by the Journal editors
• Interact and correspond with authors, potential authors, subscribers, etc.
• Assist in the preparation of books for the JOD book series
• Manage and update the JOD’s databases
• Manage all electronic and paper files for the JOD as well as for the Journal’s Coeditor
• Support the staff of the International Forum for Democratic Studies with special projects as necessary
• Assist with using InDesign to lay out articles as necessary
• Attend conferences, meetings, and other events as necessary
• Assist the JOD’s Coeditor with scheduling, travel arrangements, reimbursements, correspondence, filing, and other administrative matters
• Assist the Vice President for Studies and Analysis with scheduling and other administrative tasks
• Assist with other administrative and editing duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., political science, international relations, history);
• Some editorial experience preferred;
• Strong writing and editing skills;
• Ability to work as part of a team;
• Attention to detail;
• Excellent verbal communication and solid organizational skills.
• Computer skills – experience with Microsoft Office required; familiarity with InDesign, database maintenance preferred.
• Legal authorization to work in the United States.
