Success Academy Charter Schools is a fast-growing not-for-profit charter management organization that operates nine public charter elementary and middle schools throughout New York City. Our first charter school, Success Academy Harlem 1, serving largely a low-income, minority population, is the #1 charter school in New York City and is among the top 1% of all public elementary schools in New York State. Success Academy Harlem 1 was featured in the documentary films Waiting for Superman and The Lottery. Our other charter schools in Harlem have also produced unprecedented student achievement results across the board, and our newer schools in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and the Upper West Side are poised to do the same. We are particularly proud that our schools put to rest the notion that there are certain populations or zip codes where consistently high student achievement is not attainable—our schools flatly disprove this.

Over the next decade, our network will grow to as many as 40 schools that provide a phenomenal K-8 public education to New York City schoolchildren. Our dual mission is to offer children in New York City an exceptional public education that prepares them to succeed in college and life, and to forever alter the educational prospects for all public school children by creating a “tipping point” – moving a nation where educational failure is the norm to a nation that expects and demands high-quality public school options for all children.

Responsibilities

During the school year, Legal Internships are unpaid, part-time positions. During the summer, Legal Internships are unpaid full-time positions of 10 weeks’ duration. We are currently hiring Legal Interns for the Spring 2012 term, and for Summer 2012.

Legal Interns will gain exceptional, hands-on experience in matters dealing with cutting-edge education law, charter school law, and public school law in a way that tangibly, and in real time, benefits the students we educate. Legal Interns will conduct legal research, draft legal memoranda, and assist in other legal matters relevant to the operation of charter schools and/or a non-profit organization.

Legal Interns will report to the Assistant General Counsel and will work closely with both the General Counsel and the Assistant General Counsel.

Qualifications

Candidates must be currently enrolled law students at an accredited law school, and must have demonstrated extraordinary success in law school thus far.

The ideal candidate will have strong research, writing, problem solving, and analytical abilities. He/she must be a team player but also be able to work independently. Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills are a must, as well as incredible attention to detail. The ideal candidate will have an eagerness to learn and a passion for education reform.

The Law Internship will not result in a permanent position. Legal Interns may not apply for positions with Success Academy Charter Schools until completion of their internships.
