The Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB) - New York City’s independent police oversight agency - is empowered to receive, investigate, make findings and recommend action on complaints against New York City police officers that allege the use of excessive force, abuse of authority, discourtesy or offensive language. The Board’s investigations are conducted in an impartial fashion by the Board’s investigative staff, which is composed entirely of civilian employees. The CCRB receives and investigates approximately 7,500 complaints each year. Additional information concerning the CCRB is available at www.nyc.gov/ccrb.UNIT DESCRIPTION
The CCRB is required by the New York City Charter to educate the public about its mission and duties and issue two reports each year describing its activities. The Community Outreach Unit fulfills this mandate by conducting outreach meetings with members of the public, developing and producing the agency’s brochures and reports, applying for funding to develop projects supporting the mission of the agency, and partnering with other organizations to foster positive community-police relations.INTERNSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
The Community Outreach & Program Development Intern will assist the Community Outreach Unit with:
• Developing standardized curriculum for the Community Outreach Program.
• Training youth participants in the Community Outreach Program various skills including public speaking, community outreach techniques and strategy, project management, and role-playing scenarios among other skills.
• Developing outreach materials (e.g. informational pamphlets, “know your rights” cards) that reflect the needs and concerns of the youth within the targeted area.
• Conducting focus groups at the beginning and end of the Community Outreach Program.
• Aggregating and analyzing information collected from the focus groups with the aim of improving outreach materials, outreach strategy, and the internship training curriculum, ensuring that the program is youth-friendly and responsive to community needs.
• Researching and identifying relevant constituencies and organizations.
• Communicating with organizations to schedule outreach presentations.
• Preparing materials and curriculum for informational presentations.
• Conducting informational presentations for the general public on CCRB services, the police oversight process, individuals’ rights and responsibilities during police encounters, and issues relevant to community-police relations at organizations throughout the New York City metropolitan area.
• Updating internal community outreach database, organizing electronic and hardcopy archives and folders.
• Opportunity to engage in a variety of other Community Outreach Unit related tasks.
Qualifications:
QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates for the internship should be enrolled in or have completed a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, or work experience in Educational Psychology, Learning and Development, Training and Development, Organizational Learning, Industrial-Organizational Psychology, Political Science, Urban Policy, Social Policy, Public Service, Public Administration, Education, or a related field. Candidates should possess excellent interpersonal, organizational, and computer skills. Spanish fluency is a plus.
