Media Intern (One month)Control Arms is a global civil society alliance campaigning for a “bulletproof” Arms Trade Treaty that will protect lives and livelihoods. A “bulletproof” Arms Trade Treaty means an international legally-binding agreement that will stop transfers of arms and ammunitions that fuel conflict, poverty and serious violations of human rights and international humanitarian law.
This winter, the Final Diplomatic Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty will be held from March 18-29 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, NY. Ideally, the Media Intern will be available 3-4 days a week from 4 March through 5 April, including 17, 24 and 30 March.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Support the lead Media Officer in creating and promoting press releases, hosting press briefings, and arranging and facilitating interviews
Assist the Communications team and Media Officer with creating sample tweets and circulating media resources to campaigners
Update and manage journalist and media outlet databases
Assist with media relations
Compile and maintain a list of media citations in the international press, in English, French, Spanish and Arabic
Assist with reporting on media developments, including daily/weekly updates of top media hits and help create a final media report at the end of the conference
Support staff and undertake special projects and assignments as needed
Liaise with campaign lead to ensure media coverage for stunts and campaign activities
Support campaigners by helping them to arrange interviews in their national press
Qualifications:
REQUIREMENTS
We are interested in applicants whose studies were/are related to Communications, Multimedia Communications, New Media, Journalism, and/or other relevant fields
Knowledge of how to use a variety of social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Instagram, etc for advocacy or organizational purposes
Excellent writing skills
Superior communication and research skills
Attention to detail; Organizational and administrative skills.
Effective team player with the ability to work and think independently, and to be resourceful and proactive.
Ability to think creatively
Proficiency in English, fluency in other languages helpful
Ability to work independently and in a deadline-driven environment.
Previous nonprofit and/or journalism experience preferred.
Affinity with the Secretariat’s goals and objectives
Interest in photojournalism preferred.PREFERRED:
Fluency in Spanish, French or Arabic
Previous experience working in the media, particularly with writing press releases, and organizing press briefings
