Legal Intern

Description:

Legal Intern

Control Arms is a global civil society alliance campaigning for a “bulletproof” Arms Trade Treaty that will protect lives and livelihoods. A “bulletproof” Arms Trade Treaty means an international legally-binding agreement that will stop transfers of arms and ammunitions that fuel conflict, poverty and serious violations of human rights and international humanitarian law.

The Arms Trade Treaty Legal Response Network (ATT Legal) - a project of Oxfam International and the Control Arms Campaign - is a pro-bono initiative that provides legal advice in relation to the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty negotiations.

This winter, the Final Diplomatic Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty will be held from March 18-29 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, NY. Ideally, the Legal Intern will be available 2-3 days a week from January through March, full time March 17-30, including Sunday the 24th. The Network will be operating at UN headquarters in New York during the ATT negotiation conference in March 2013. The Network will also provide advice, briefings and capacity building from now until the negotiating conference.

In order to offer a broad range of pro-bono legal advice and services during and between formal arms trade treaty negotiations, the Network is seeking students of international law or other legal studies to help coordinate the Network and provide supporting research and administrative assistance. This is an excellent opportunity for students to learn more about the United Nations, International Treaty Negotiations, Arms Control, the Arms Trade Treaty, and NGO UN advocacy.
