Company/Organization: The Fresh Air Fund

Description:

Since 1877, The Fresh Air Fund has worked with and provided New York City children from low-income communities free summer experiences. More than 1.8 million children have been served through two core program areas, the Fresh Air Camps on Sharpe Reservation or through visits to volunteer host families in states from North Carolina and Virginia to Maine, and into southern Canada. Since 1994, The Fresh Air Fund has supported complementary year-round academic enrichment programs together with tutoring and mentoring, in addition to a Career-Awareness Program, a College Connections Program, and a Teen Leadership Program. The Fresh Air Fund is an independent, not-for-profit organization. Presently, each year nearly 7,000 boys and girls participate in Fresh Air programs.

The Fresh Air Fund is seeking talented and driven Communications Interns to assist the Communications department from January to May.

Spring interns will have a hands-on experience in the nonprofit communications field, working on projects to support media relations, publicity and social media efforts.

Responsibilities:
• Interviewing Fresh Air participants
• Communicating with media outlets and volunteer leaders about publicity requests
• Writing and coordinating feature stories, press releases, pitch letters and media alerts
• Conducting online outreach
• Drafting social media posts
• Making follow up calls
• Attending Fresh Air Fund events to secure photos and interviews with participants
• Administrative tasks including: Photo cataloging and sourcing, answering
phones, and assisting with department tasks

Qualifications:

• Must be currently enrolled and taking classes at an accredited program or institution and have completed at least one semester OR have graduated within the past six months
• Strong writing skills
• A passion for communications and nonprofits
• A drive to learn
• Excellent time management and communication skills
• A collaborative work ethic
• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
• Working knowledge of the media and communications industry is a plus
• Graphic Design skills a plus
