US Department of Transportation Womens Internship Program

Description:

Currently seeking qualified female students to be placed in transportation related internships with state departments of transportation, transit agencies, aviation authorities, banks participating in the DOT’s Short Term Lending Program, transportation related technical assistance centers and private transportation companies. We are currently placing interns at Morgan State University’s National Transportation Center, Maryland Transit Administration, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), Mid-Atlantic Small Business Transportation Resource Center (SBTRC), and Maryland State Highway Administration.
This program is part of programs of the White House Council on Women and Girls. More information on this program can be found at www.osdbu.dot.gov/WG.

Qualifications:

•Currently enrolled female students
•Minimum GPA of 2.8, submit copy of transcript
•Interview
•Application including evaluation from a professor
•One page letter, expressing interest in the transportation industry and career opportunities

Students must complete a 5-7 page paper on the internship experience and the transportation industry during the duration of the internship.


Compensation:
•Where possible interns successfully completing the program will receive academic credit. If academic credit is not available, limited number stipends of $1,000 will be offered a needs-only basis. •If requesting a stipend, the student must submit a letter explaining their need and requesting the hardship stipend.

Note: To receive the stipend, an international student must have a J1 visa, written authorization to work from the US Immigration Service, and have a Social Security Number before work commences.

If the student is willing to work a non-paid internship, they may apply without the above criteria, but will not be eligible for the stipend.


Paid Internship Info:

$1000 for financial hardship or college credit

Hours:

Minimum of 5 hours per week, 50 hours for semester

January 2011 - June 2011
