INTERNSHIP PROGRAM:
The Communications/Media Intern works closely with California Fair Share staff to develop and implement media, communications, and public relations strategies to win grassroots campaigns. S/he plays an essential role in garnering media attention and educating the public and lawmakers about economic fairness issues. The intern will interact with grassroots activists, members of the media, state and federal legislators, and coalition partners. Experienced Fair Share staff will provide training and mentorship to best prepare interns for careers in political activism, public policy, journalism, and non-profit management. Students completing the internship program may be offered a full-time paid position with California Fair Share.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
• Issue Analysis: Track and evaluate current events and media reports on economic inequality, education policy, tax and budget, immigration reform, and infrastructure.
• Media Writing: Create and distribute media materials, including press releases, press advisories, letters-to-the-editor, and issue fact sheets.
• Media Outreach: Organize press conferences, coordinate social media program, call reporters, and maintain a good working relationship with elected officials, issue experts and coalition partners.
• Citizen Outreach: Recruit, train and manage volunteers to gather public comments and petition signatures for the campaign.

Qualifications:

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
• Enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program in communications, journalism, political science, public relations or a closely related field preferred, but not required.
• Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
• Strong communication skills.
• Understanding of print, broadcast, and online media.
• Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with others.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
