Access to mentors, especially in the early years of a college curriculum, is a critical contribution to long-term career success. In non-profit sectors, many of these opportunities are unpaid, but no less valuable for relationship development. However, even in for-profit sectors, internships may be paid, but often insufficiently for diverse candidates to consider them as viable economic choices. This disparity is apparent when a student is trying to manage school expenses or a move to a more distant location for internships. To address this shortfall, an intern may elect additional part-time jobs which can dilute the internship participation and learning process.

The purpose of this proposal is to provide supplemental or sole funding of a candidate in an established internship. Programs are selected by a student but also screened for sufficient mentor commitment to warrant the student’s investment. By addressing the financial component of such programs, students can opt for a wider variety of programs without adverse budget impact for education.

Qualifications:

- Under 26 years of age
- Home/permanent address registered in the counties of Unaka’s operation (Greene Co., TN; Mullins Co., SC, Marion Co., SC; Lake Co., IN; Scotland Co., NC), or those immediately adjacent to those counties.
- Completed minimum one (1) semester of undergraduate degree and currently enrolled in similar program as a full-time student (12 hours or more per semester)
- Grade point average (GPA) must be maintained equal to minimum standards of the institution in which the student is enrolled currently, or a completed undergraduate or associate’s degree.
- A single person can receive a maximum of $15,000 of funds.
