Assistant in orphanage
Description:
In the orphanage, there are children from a few days old (abandoned) up to 16 years old, who have no parents or can’t be maintained by the parents. The orphanage has between 40 and 50 children, the majority up to 6 years old.The activities you can do with the children depend on the age group. For the groups with the little ones the main work is playing with the children and taking care. In the older groups the focus will be more on educational activities, creative activities, encouraging self confidence and for example teaching personal hygiene.
Activities:
- In the morning (from 7.30 to 12.30), help is needed with taking care of the babies / children from 0 to 3 years.
- In the afternoon (14:30 to 19:00) the children from 7 to 15 years old need guidance with their homework. The children go to public schools in Cusco in the morning. There is an annual vacation around mid December to mid March, so in this period, no homework is required. In addition, the children are tutored in courses in which they have problems at school. Because the groups are rather small, there is time for such personal attention. Also for all children English lessons are offered.
- In the afternoons besides educational activities there is also time for creativity. This varies and depends mainly on the commitment / capabilities of the temps. The trainee has a big influence on this part of the work. However, all the activities the trainee will organize, the trainee will first discuss with the psychologist who works in the orphanage. The psychologist coordinates the work on the substantive level.
- Also on Saturdays there are activities. Because the children do not have any homework to do (as in the holiday), there is time for such sports, music and theater. The works of the trainees includes assisting the permanent workers and organize and implement activities themselves. The content of the work is co-determined by the level of Spanish that the student has since, especially with the older group, communication is an important factor. The coordination of the internship is taken care of by two persons, the psychologist and the director of the project. You plan your work with them.
