Short description of internship:
This school for learners with Autism was founded in 1974 with 5 learners and has grown to over 76 learners presently. Autism is a lifelong, neurological and developmental disability which affects patterns of development and a person’s ability to communicate, understand language, play and socially interact with others. Each class has a qualified educator and experienced class assistant. The therapy department has a qualified psychologist, speech therapist and occupational therapist.

Complementary therapies are an integral part of the educational programme at the school. This includes: Horse riding,Art therapy, Music therapy, HANDLE, Cranio sacral therapy. Learners also take part in specially adapted Sport programmes and Literacy programmes. The School regularly hosts community outreach programmes where they offer support, counselling and education regarding Autism to increase awareness and community support.

Internship tasks:
The school offers internships to Educational Students, Psychology students, Physical Therapy, Music Therapy, Special Needs, Nutrition and Occupational Therapy as well as to students and Volunteers who want to make a difference.

Psychology internship description:
Psychology interns are exposed to different areas of the school to ensure that their experience is a holistic one and they gain maximum benefit from their internship as follows:

Psychology section
Individualized Educational Development Programme Feedback Sessions: Interns receive exposure to the IEDP feedback sessions. This includes both the pre-discussion meetings and feedback meetings with parents.

Screening Interviews: Interns form part of the multi-disciplinary team during the screening interviews and learn how screenings are conducted in the school.

General Learner Observations
Interns are involved in observation of learners at all class levels from ages 3 to 18 years of age. This is done on a continuous basis.

Special Projects
Interns are often involved in special projects and will liaise with educators and the psychologist in this regard.

Applied Behavior Analysis Training
Interns have the opportunity to receive basic training in ABA from a qualified behaviour analyst. This basic training allows them to work more intensely with ASD learners.

Autism Clinic
As part of the outreach team interns assist parents with the application of daily living skills routine.

Occupational Therapy Liaising
Interns spend time interacting with the part time Occupational Therapist at the school. During these sessions they learn about the role of the OT and autism and the holistic focus of the child

Workshop Preparation
Interns may have the opportunity to partner with senior learners to the local retail stores and observe how learners receive training and exposure to the open labour market system.

Self Development
During their stay at the School, interns have the opportunity to commit themselves to learn more about ASD and the resources at the school as well as the professional expertise within the school.

Qualifications:

Applicant requirements:
-Studying towards a degree/diploma in Psychology or Counselling or a related field
-Have a desire to work with handicapped children.
-Some past experience would be preferable in your field but not essential
-Good communication skills
-A love of children and a passion to make a difference in their lives.
