About the Shark Conservation Advocacy Intern Position:

TIRN is seeking a dynamic, self-motivated intern committed to conservation issues and focused on a career path in marine conservation biology and ocean advocacy. We are seeking an energetic, responsible team player to fill this intern position.

This internship will impart a solid, working understanding of shark conservation policy and policy research. This internship provides the opportunity to work and learn at an established non-profit organization dedicated to environmental advocacy and wildlife protection, in a beautiful and rustic national park setting, 45 minutes north of San Francisco.

This position can be filled as a standard unpaid internship or as a Residential Internship. The standard internship requires a three-month commitment working 16-40 hours per week. The unpaid Residential Internship requires a full-time, six-month commitment, and the intern will receive housing in TIRN’s newly renovated intern housing in wooded Lagunitas, California, and five miles from our offices on national parklands. Working hours are typically 9 am to 5 pm with some evening and weekend work required.

The intern will complete specific projects related to supporting shark conservation advocacy during the internship (about 75% time), and carry out ongoing administrative tasks (about 25% time). The intern will be evaluated regularly and will make a final presentation on his/her work at the close of the internship.

The shark conservation advocacy intern will gain experience working with the director of conservation science, executive director, board of directors, development director and other development team members on tasks including:

• Maintain Shark Advocacy Database
• Assist in literature and bibliographic research for scientific publications
• Monitor local, national and international shark bills
• Develop online campaigns to raise support for shark conservation issues
• Assist in data analysis of shark tagging studies
• Assist in preparing materials for advocacy training workshop
• Promote TIRN’s research expeditions, naturalist training programs, events, merchandise store and other ventures online and through in person tabling and other means;
• Develop visual materials including web pages, presentations, online brochures and promotional videos;
• Maintain and enhance TIRN’s social media presence through communication with more than 20,000 Facebook friends and other social networks;

Qualifications:

Qualifications

Candidates must:
• Have a demonstrated interest in environmental conservation.
• Possess at least a four-year degree or commensurate work related experience.
• Demonstrate excellent English-language writing and verbal communication skills.
• Have strong computer skills and internet research skills.
• Be proficient with MS Office
• Have a desire to learn, be flexible, productive and self-reliant, and contribute to building a positive team atmosphere.

Preferred qualifications:
• Candidates with website design and flash player video editing skills preferred.
• Spanish speaking and writing skills preferred.
• Possession of a laptop helpful.
• CA driver’s license preferred.
