Company/Organization: Peace Child International

Youth empowerment NGO Peace Child International (PCI) runs three “Be The Change Academies” in Monrovia, Liberia, Kenema, Sierra Leone and Conakry, Guinea. This programme seeks out disadvantaged young women with the germ of a business idea and then trains and mentors them to start and/or build up a viable business plan. The best of these plans receive funding from the BTCAs’ revolving loan fund.

Many young women have ingenious business ideas but lack the skills to translate them into viable business plans - the volunteer’s job is to train them to make that translation. PCI seeks young people with an enthusiasm for helping the young women of these regions develop and implement practical business plans. Applicants should have some business knowledge and a demonstrable interest in one or more of the following: teaching, youth development, sustainable development, NGOs and/or international development.

The positions last for 12 months (September 2014 to August 2015). They also give the volunteers the opportunity to attend the first of our World Youth Congresses in Sub-Saharan Africa and, if desired, jointly present the work of the BTCAs. The 7th in our Congress series, the 2014 World Youth Congress will be held in Guinea in October. (www.peacechild.org/projects-2/world-youth-congress).

Volunteers will be provided with accommodation, meals and pocket money plus health insurance and visa costs. Volunteers must attend initial training in the UK. Flights from the UK and back will be provided for those staying the full year.
