Description:

The Coho Fisheries Monitoring Intern will work for the Salmon Protection and Watershed Network (SPAWN) initiative. The Fisheries Intern will work to organize and implement research and monitoring activities for coho salmon and other terrestrial and aquatic wildlife. Monitoring efforts change seasonally; autumn efforts focus on spawning, spring efforts on smolt traps, and summer efforts on juvenile salmonid rescue and relocation. The intern will gain technical skills in research and monitoring, salmonid restoration, and environmental education.

Responsibilities/Tasks:
• Monitoring salmonid populations and habitat conditions in Lagunitas Watershed
• Riparian restoration
• Report writing
• Recruit and coordinate volunteers to assist with monitoring efforts
• Assist in the development of education materials and support environmental education programs
• Biweekly posting on organization blog

Qualifications:

Desired Skills/Qualifications:
• Experience or interest in watershed ecology, fisheries biology, botany, and/or environmental studies
• Experience in fieldwork and/or habitat restoration
• Experience with environmental education
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work independently
• Ability to work outside in varying terrain and weather conditions– including in proximity to poison oak
• Ability to use PC or Mac proficiently (Microsoft Office)
• Valid driver’s license (reliable transportation required)

Terms of Employment:
• Project Duration: 12 weeks
o Two week trial period and possibility for internship extension after 12 week evaluation
• Total hours: 40 hours/week
• Compensation: stipend unavailable; cost-free housing may be available (space limited)


Gear:
• Outdoor appropriate apparel
• Warm layers that can be worn under full waders and boots comfortably
• Polarized sunglasses
• Waders and boots are available depending on foot size
• Field notebook recommended
