Punjab Marginalized Community Empowerment Supervisor

Share |

Company/Organization: MicroEmpowerED

Description:

EduCARE India is a registered NGO with the vision of promoting pathways to intellectual freedom, social justice, community welfare, economic liberty and sustainable development for individuals, families and social groups. The organization does not receive external financial aid, instead working by a philosophy of self-sustainability and pooling resources from within. EduCARE has several affiliate programs, one of which is MicroEmpowerED. This program is focused on supporting and empowering marginalized individuals and communities through various grassroots projects and initiatives that address a broad range of health, economic, education, environmental and housing issues.

All of our projects in Punjab deal with Marginalized Community Empowerment (MCE), one of MicroEmpowerED’s main areas of interest. The beneficiaries are Rajasthani migrants living on government-owned land, in Paro and Hariana. As these are some of the most underprivileged individuals in India, there is almost no end to the variety of ways we can support them: the After-School Programme focuses on fun education for children; Young Men’s/Women’s Associations provide a forum for discussing issues like gender roles; Self-Help Groups have been set up to find supplementary sources of income, encourage saving, and increase financial literacy, and Health Workshops provide information on hygiene, nutrition, disease, and local medical facilities. We are also looking to increase our impact by assessing, researching and implementing micro enterprise opportunities as well as teaching and assisting in the creation of vertical gardens or organic farms to work towards balancing their diets. The Punjab MCE Supervisor is responsible for overseeing these projects, and reporting back to the MicroEmpowerED Program Coordinator in Himachal Pradesh.

The Supervisor regularly meets with Project Managers to check on the progress of the project; help guide and motivate where needed; discuss and assist with future plans; aid in the upkeep of documentation, and provide any general support needed. Work in rural India rarely goes exactly as planned - projects often move slowly, and encounter many obstructions - so the Supervisor will need to draw on their creativity and problem solving skills to help Project Managers find alternative solutions. This position is ideal for someone looking for a management role, as they will have anywhere from 3 to 8 direct reports at any given time. A significant part of the Supervisor’s work will be done in the field – the children’s enthusiasm for our activities is such that one pair of hands is rarely sufficient! The Supervisor will mainly be assisting Project Managers in sessions with the women and children, but they could be asked to step in and run a session if an intern is absent or we have a position vacancy.

Through direct contact with both interns on ground-level and those with more administrative roles, the Punjab MCE Supervisor can assess the resource, manpower and information needs of their projects, and work with the Program Coordinator and Director/Assistant Director of EduCARE to resolve these needs. There is a large amount of flexibility in our organization and we believe that creative and new approaches to problems are needed to cause a real and sustainable impact, and the Punjab MCE Supervisor is in an ideal position to innovate new projects where they see fit.

Success in this role relies on being able to work well with other people, so strong interpersonal and communication skills are required.
