Job Summary
The Performance Improvement Department of Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital (LPCH) at Stanford is looking to hire bright, hard-working and energetic recent graduates to gain experience in healthcare, and specifically in process improvement. Interns will support the work of the Performance Improvement (PI) department in its effort to improve the clinical and operating performance of LPCH. You will be exposed to medical center operations management, operations consulting and lean performance improvement methodology. You will also have the opportunity to interact with Stanford’s LPCH clinicians and administrators. It is a great experience for someone interested in a career in healthcare to get a first-hand understanding of hospital operations.

Essential Functions
You will work with a team to support Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital’s implementation of Packard Quality Management System (PQMS), based on lean philosophy and principles. This work may include:
• Supporting the planning, set-up, execution, and follow-up of PI events and projects.
• Writing reports, analyzing data, creating and interpreting data displays to support decisions on PI projects.
• Collaborating with management, client groups, and others engaged in improvement initiatives to develop methods to monitor and report process improvement.
• Assisting with developing presentations and documents that articulate a compelling story line through the effective use of data.
• Analyzing and identifying opportunities for improvement with a goal to develop, recommend, and implement proposed solutions.
• Executing time studies, process observations and other information gathering activities that support PI decision making.

Example Projects from Current Intern Cohort:
Participation in Local Improvement Team: As part of the Maternity Local Improvement Team, participate in a Post-Partum Hemorrhage simulation by tracking clinicians involved, recording task times and process steps to identify opportunities for change. As a result, work with a team to develop a standard response in an emergency.

Auditing Family Centered Rounds: Participate on Family Centered Rounds with attending physicians, residents, nurses, families and patients to observe how they interact with one another and make clinical diagnoses. Make recommendations from observations on how to improve information flow and engagement between clinicians, family and patient.

Observation in the Operating Room: Spend majority of the week in the operating room shadowing a general surgeon to collect data regarding patient progression. Supply data to cross-functional team, & collaborate to identify improvement opportunities for optimizing patient and family satisfaction

About the Performance Improvement Department
The Performance Improvement department functions as an internal consulting department for the hospital. It is staffed by a small group of professionals with extensive clinical and/or top tier healthcare management consulting experience. The department works closely with the hospital’s senior leadership, physicians, clinicians and frontline staff to improve clinical and business performance through implementation of the Packard Quality Management System.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in a work-related field/discipline from an accredited college or university and a strong academic record.

• Strong computer skills: proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and basic knowledge of Visio.
• This position will particularly be of interest to graduates planning a career in healthcare, industrial engineering, and/or process improvement.
