Jonathan Slaff & Associates (www.jsnyc.com) does media relations for cultural institutions, professional theater and dance companies and civic events in New York City.  The firm solicits print and broadcast media outlets for news/feature story coverage, arts reviews and photo placement. It is one of the few press offices in New York that takes its own press photos. Artists represented have received 19 Obies, three Bessies, Lucille Lortel, Theater World, and Outer Critics Circle Awards.  Interns will work with up to twelve professional theater groups at a high management level.  Recommended for students on arts management or arts journalism career path. This is non-salaried but a great learning experience. Interested parties please send writing sample and resume to: PR@jsnyc.com. ??In both cases, our work is heavily arts-related, so any candidate should have some kind of professional experience or ambition toward the arts, particularly performing arts. ??I cannot say which educational level is best suited to our training. The prerequisite is passion for the arts.  We do not have any particular academic preparation requirement, but good written and spoken English is important, since most of our work is language-based. ??All training is at:  55 Perry Street, Ste. #1M, New York, NY 10014. ??Here is an example of a training plan.  You will see it is designed for a 26-week internship.  Please note: Since our work is interdisciplinary, the phases of training are combined in many cases. ??PHASE 1: ?The Trainee will gain a general understanding of the company, its mission and goals, business practices and tiquette, as well as its services and products. The Trainee will receive an orientation into the landscape of arts n New York, including its major institutions and funders, and the government agencies (City, State and Federal) involved in funding the arts. The nature and process of arts news will be examined in depth, as well as the journalistic and ethical issues involved in determining what is artistically newsworthy. The economic impact of the arts on neighborhoods and the city at large will be explained, in context of Jonathan Slaffs research as Chairman of DowntownNYC. Finally, artistic issues of drama and dance criticism will be examined in depth. (Weeks 1 to 3) ??PHASE 2: ?The Trainee will gain knowledge and practical experience in web software development tools and web design to learn how to effectively edit and maintain NY Theatre Wire and Curators Choice, two of the websites of Metro New Media, Inc. (Weeks 2 to 4) ??PHASE 3: ?The Trainee will gain skills and experience with press releases of arts events and will have the chance to improve skills in the relevant tasks associated with that including interviews, writing, etc. (Weeks 3 to 26) ??PHASE 4: ?The Trainee will gain an understanding of the various steps involved in an email marketing strategy/campaign and also gain practical experience in assisting in the execution of it through the use of Infacta Group Mail. ?(Weeks 3 to 26) ??PHASE 5: ?Trainee will acquire skills in theatrical and dance photography and apply them to campaigns for clients of Jonathan Slaff & Associates. (Weeks 3 to 26) ??PHASE SIX: ?Trainee will acquire skills in TV production and apply them to Joe Franklin TV, Alien Comic TV, and other video productions of Metro New Media, Inc. (Weeks 3 to 26) ??NOTE: ?Two computer stations are dedicated for interns office work. All software, media directories, and a reference library, including manuals of all kinds, will be at interns disposal. A photo and video kit are dedicated to interns photography and videography. Responsibilities:?Post listings, assist in production photography, assist in web design, research media and trade contacts, use media databases, draft press releases, assist clients with their social networking campaigns, prepare press kits, greet critics at shows.
Qualifications:?College student (undergrad or grad), good written English, willingness to learn and master journalistic writing.
