Description:

Law students will be trained to prepare asylum cases from start to finish, from client intake interviews to trial preparation to the appeal process.
Responsibilities include:
• Conducting client intake interviews
• Reviewing affidavits and evidence to support asylum and VAWA claims
• Conducting legal research on issues surrounding asylum and other immigration law
• Conducting political risk assessment research on clients’ countries of origin
• Prepare clients for Arlington Asylum Office interviews and/or Immigration Court proceedings
• Observe hearings before the Baltimore and/or Arlington Immigration Court.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have the following: a basic understanding of U.S. immigration law and policy; excellent oral and written communication skills; the ability to communicate patiently, respectfully, and empathetically with individuals from a variety of backgrounds as well as survivors of trauma and torture; and the ability to manage numerous tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines.
