The Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) Internship Program provides students with a unique opportunity to apply classroom skills and theory to real life work situations. This hands-on program is designed to strengthen fundamental emergency management concepts and develop the confidence and skills of the next generation to prepare them for future employment opportunities.

As an intern, participants are expected to employ their skills and abilities to contribute to the objectives of their assigned host organization. Our internships provide exposure to industry professionals and promote career development. To support that endeavor, interns will be placed based on interests and specific project availability.

Participants can obtain valuable in-depth experience in emergency management and other related fields. In addition, interns will:

- Work with a national leader in the field of emergency management

- Develop confidence walking into an interview with numerous examples to use
- Obtain a greater understanding of career possibilities and areas of interest
- Gain marketability for employment opportunities after graduation

Natural Hazards Unit Intern | 1 opening | Location: Tallahassee, FL
Objective: To take emergency management and planning principles learned in the classroom and apply them in a real-world setting. Job Description: This internship position is within the Natural Hazards Unit. The unit coordinates the refinement of preparedness studies, operational plans, analysis tools and procedures regarding natural hazards/all-hazards planning. This position provides assistance to the Natural Hazards Unit with tasks associated with the unitís core programs (Comprehensive Emergency Management Planning, Continuity Planning, Hurricane Program, and Fuels Planning) as well as non-core programs. The unit also serves as the nucleus of the State Emergency Operations Centerís Planning Section/Emergency Support Function 5 during emergency/disaster response operations.

Project Tasks:
1. Assist with the revision of the standard operating guides and job aids for Emergency Support Function 5 (ESF 5) and its associated units and sub-units,
2. Assist with revision of the Mass Migration Annex to the State Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan,
3. Other duties as necessary.

Qualifications:

Basic knowledge of planning (classroom instruction). Ability to communicate effectively with others verbally and in writing. Ability to operate a personal computer. Knowledge of Microsoft Office products. Ability to work on similar and dissimilar tasks/projects simultaneously. Ability to work independently without continuous direction or instruction. Ability to adapt to changing mission requirements with little notice.

The following FEMA Independent Study courses at a minimum are required by the end of the first week of internship: IS-1 (Emergency Manager: An Orientation to the Position), IS-100 (Introduction to Incident Command System), IS-200 (ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents), IS-700 (National Incident Management System, an Introduction), and IS-800 (National Response Framework, an
Introduction).

Recommended courses include IS-230 (Principles of Emergency Management) and IS-235 (Emergency Planning).
