Description:

ENCCI - El Salvador (National Evaluation of Quality of Childcare, El Salvador) is a five-year evaluation of child care centers in El Salvador. This project evaluates a training program by Whole Child International (WCI), an organization that focuses on improving the caregiving environments for vulnerable children by effecting changes within child care centers and orphanages. In this project, WCI is collaborating with the El Salvadoran government, including the National Institute for the Full Development of Children and Adolescents (ISNA), and the Universidad Centroamericana “José Simeón Cañas” (UCA) in San Salvador, to conduct a series of educational and technical assistance trainings for government officials, child care center directors, and center caregivers. Duke University will assess the impact of the WCI program on childcare environments as well as child caregiver wellbeing. Through a longitudinal, randomized control trial, 204 child care centers will be assigned to one of seven treatment arms that will receive different components of WCIs program; in addition, a community comparison group will be enrolled to identify selection effects as well as local norms and standards. Qualitative research will also explore how cultural norms regarding child caregiving intersects with the work within the childcare centers. Training of program staff in El Salvador was conducted by Duke investigators in October 2014, and data collection began in late 2014.
