Company/Organization: The Barnes Foundation

Description: The Barnes Foundation is now accepting applications to become a Publications Volunteer.

The Barnes Foundation publishes a multitude of print and web ephemera: e-newsletters, Facebook posts, blog posts, invitations, press releases, a booklet of programs. We address audiences from parents of toddlers to our Corporate Council members to young city professionals. This position focuses on the stages of reviewing and editing print and web ephemera, including proofreading for spelling, grammar, and syntax; fact checking; maintaining an appropriate voice; and imposing consistency of style across pieces.

We need a volunteer who reads carefully and does the legwork to make sure that facts are correct, tone is audience-appropriate, syntax is smooth and clear, and style decisions are maintained across all materials. This job is more rewriting than writing, but you may be asked to write blog or Facebook posts. Ideally, you would come in at least once a week, but would be available two or three days, either on-site or remotely.

You will get experience editing different kinds of pieces, interacting with various departments, and managing small editorial projects from text submission through publication.

Volunteering at the Barnes provides unique access to the collection, programs, and staff, as well as opportunities to enjoy camaraderie with fellow art, culture, horticulture, and education enthusiasts.

Established as an educational institution the Barnes Foundation carries out its mission by promoting appreciation of the arts and horticultural science, through the preservation, presentation, and interpretation of the collections of Albert C. and Laura L. Barnes.

Celebrated for its exceptional breadth, depth, and quality, the Barnes Foundations art collection includes works by some of the greatest European and American masters of impressionism, post-impressionist, and early modern art, as well as African sculpture, Pennsylvania German decorative arts, Native American textiles, metalwork, and more. The 12-acre Arboretum contains over 3,000 species of woody plants and trees.

The Foundation engages diverse audiences through its exceptional collections and related high-quality programs that reflect a broad range of periods and cultures and build on the founders’ innovative educational vision of transforming lives through the arts and horticulture.
