Job Description

Intern tasks will include but not be limited to:
(1.) Engaging in educational outreach centered on our Fishmobile, a converted bookmobile that serves as a rolling educational aquarium. Fishmobile tasks include cleaning equipment used on the Fishmobile and preparing educational programs used with the Fishmobile
(2.) Engaging visitors and student groups in educational programing at the Center.
Our Center is open in season from April 15 – October 20 Thursday – Monday
10 am – 4 pm. Guided tours of the animals in the center and talks about the Chesapeake Bay are given to each group. Student groups also visit the Center
for Educational programs including but not limited to Fisheries Management – based on the menhaden fishery, Spatutti – an elementary level oyster program,
It’s a Crab’s Life – based on the life cycle of the blue crab.
(3.) Working alongside master gardener volunteers to develop and implement a Conservation Landscaping program designed to improve water quality in the Chesapeake Bay through active participation on the part of property owners in implementing restoration techniques.
(4.) Supporting our oyster restoration and citizen science program on Tilghman Island and Bay Hundred, in partnership with Marylander’s Grow Oysters, by interacting with growers. Helping to keep the oysters healthy, writing a monthly e-newsletter, conducting monthly growth and mortality measurements. Participating in our oyster spat delivery day and helping to plan our oyster planting day.
(5.) Assists the PWEC Executive Director with daily Center operations, including year-round animal husbandry, daily maintenance and spring-fall exhibit maintenance and volunteer and visitor interaction.

Qualifications:

An environmental Science or Biology degree would be preferred but is not a requirement.
Looking for someone that has a good work ethic and is not afraid to get dirty.
Must be able to interact and be personable with the public.

Additional Info:
Housing will be provided by PWEC to the intern for the year.
