The Genocide Intervention Networks mission is to empower individuals and communities with the tools to prevent and stop genocide and mass atrocities. We do this by two means: First, we are mobilizing a permanent anti-genocide constituency that has the power to pressure policymakers by creating an incentive for taking action against genocide and a political cost for failing to do so. Second, we support and fund projects that work directly on the ground to protect civilians from genocide and mass atrocity. Our current focus is on ending the ongoing violence in Darfur, Sudan which has killed up to 400,000 innocent civilians and displaced 2.5 million. The Genocide Intervention Network is home to STAND, a student anti-genocide network with over 700 chapters, as well as the Sudan Divestment Taskforce, a key player in the divestment movement which has now resulted in 20 states and 55 universities divesting holdings in companies operating in Sudan. We also work on a range of projects in North Darfur to protect women while collecting firewood. Beyond Darfur, we are preparing to engage in other conflict areas involving large-scale violence against civilians.
