Environmental Education Internships
Description:
Stratford Ecological Center is a non-profit organic farm and environmental education center located on 236-acres. The property contains a 95-acre State Nature Preserve, buttonbush swamps, a pond, a creek, prairies, a historic cemetery, two greenhouses, and a maple-sugaring house. The farm raises cows, pigs, sheep, goats, chickens and a llama.
Schools come from all over central Ohio to visit Stratford. Spring and fall interns lead the children on adventures on the farm and forest, exploring where our food comes from, how all things are interdependent, and practicing an appreciation for the land and all its inhabitants. Summer interns act as teachers for our summer Farm Camps for 3-12 year olds. Interns will gain valuable teaching experience in working with elementary and middle-school aged children.
Besides leading on-site field trips, spring and fall interns also teach in-school presentations conducted prior to all field trips. These pre-visits are taught with the aim of introducing key concepts and exciting the children for their upcoming trip.
Additionally, all interns tend the childrens garden, help care for the farm animals, prepare educational activities, and help maintain the facility and supplies.
Spring internships are 14 weeks long. Summer and fall internships are 10 weeks long. Interns are encouraged to apply for consecutive internships in order to experience the growing season to the extent of their availability.
Experience is preferred but not necessary. What is imperative is a love of children and a desire to share ones own passion for the environment with others.

Stratford Ecological Center
We operate an organic farm as the backdrop for our education programs. The farm raises sheep, goats, cows, pigs, chickens and a lllama. The property contains a 95-acre State Nature Preserve, buttonbush swamps, a creek, a pond, prairies, a historic cemetery, a maple-sugar house, 2 greenhouses, and 3 miles of hiking trails.
Schools come from all over central Ohio to experience the magic of the center. Summer Farm Camps immerse children aged 3-12 in real farm experiences and gentle adventures in the forest. Our appreciation-based programs teach learners of all ages how to grow their own food and how to understand the complex interrelationships between all living things.
Additionally, through the operation of an organic farm, we demonstrate key concepts of sustainable agriculture that can be replicated in back yards, school yards, in community gardens, and on other farms.
The internship program is a key component of our mission. Through it we are enabling the next generation of environmental educators and sustainable agriculture practitioners, by allowing them the opportunity to practice their skills and gain valuable hands-on experiences.
