The U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants seeks a Navigation Education Intern to assist with administrative and management functions related transit orientations for USCRI clients. The position includes bus orientations to USCRI Des Moines office locations, ESOL class locations, and medical facilities.USCRI addresses the needs and rights of persons in forced or voluntary migration worldwide by advancing fair and humane public policy, facilitating and providing direct professional services, and promoting the full participation of migrants in community life.
The USCRI field office in Des Moines opened in 2010 and now resettles hundreds of refugee families every year in the Des Moines Metro Area. The largest populations served by the Des Moines field office are Burmese, Eritrean, and Bhutanese refugees. The Des Moines field office also has an immigration and asylum services program that serves not only refugee clients and their families, but asylum seekers and immigrants from the wider community as well.
INTERNSHIP ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The Navigation Intern will be responsible to orienting each new refugee family to the Des Moines busing system. The intern will ride the bus to the home, pick up the family, and bring them to the office as well as show other important places around the Des Moines area. The intern will not be accompanied by staff. Intern will not be responsible for bus fair.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
• For Summer 2013, this internship requires a commitment of 10-12 weeks, 10-15 hours per week. Preference is given to candidates who can work 30 hours for 4-6 months. • All USCRI Des Moines internships are unpaid. Interns are responsible for all living expenses during the internship period.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED • Strong organizational skills, ability to work independently, and attention to detail a must! • Enthusiasm, positive attitude • Ability to take a strong initiative • Above all else, a good sense of humor, patience, and the will to make a difference
DESIRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED • Strong candidates will have previous internship experience in non-governmental or inter-governmental organizations. • Candidates who are fluent in a second language in addition to English are highly desired. • Understanding of the refugee resettlement process is required.
