Primate Research Intern (Summer 2020-2021)

Description:
1) Support Zoo Atlanta’s research efforts, including welfare, behavioral, and cognitive research; 2) support the research and conservation efforts of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International.The internship is 40 hours a week. Job responsibilities will be evenly split between efforts with Zoo Atlanta and with Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International.
Zoo responsibilities (20 hours per week) will include:
Daily behavioral observations for research projects, with possibility for cognitive testing sessions with apes
Data entry and management
Public talks and demonstrations
Assisting with animal husbandry 4 hours a week
Potential opportunities to pursue independent research projects
Possibility to assist with population management
Other duties as needed
Must be willing to support Zoo Atlanta’s Vision, Mission and Values statement
Must be able to comply with all safety policies and proceduresFossey Fund responsibilities (20 hours per week) will include:
Assisting with cleaning and entering long-term data
Digital media archiving
Social media engagement
Educational outreach
Other duties as needed
Qualifications:
Knowledge: Previous research experience strongly recommended, as is knowledge of Excel, electronic data collection techniques, behavioral observations, data entry, and basic descriptive statistics.Special skills and abilities: Previous experience working/volunteering at an AZA-accredited facility preferred. Position limited to U.S. nationals, unless already in the United States with a working visa.
Zoo Atlanta is open to the public 363 days out of the year, therefore, all positions at Zoo Atlanta may require employees to work weekends, holidays and/or evenings.
EDUCATION: BA in psychology, biology, zoology or related field.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Position requires physical activity; must be able to lift at least 40 pounds. Willingness to work in all weather conditions.
